Feedback please

Hi guys,

It's 5am and i've randomly woken up and can't get back to sleep, so I thought i'd get some feedback on a photograph.
My assignment deadline is fast approaching as usual, and I've been thinking and toying with an idea for one of my shots, please see below!
This is Neil holding a piece of glass with emotional thought and phrases written on it. I took it quickly so excuse the bad tone, but we are on about subject here at the moment. I think the problem with this is, you can't tell that there is glass there, therefore you may think i've put this mass of words on with photoshop or something like that. What I'm asking is, do you think i need to give the impression of glass, like pan back a bit or get a bit of glare somehow?
Let me know guys, I should really be working this out my self, but sure advice is always good :)
Cheers

Karen

:O

I was not informed this would be making a public appearance, hehe! I look like shit, you had to take my pic after an hour-and-a-half guitar thrashout didn't ya? :)

I think to put a glare or show the edges of the glass would ruin the shot altogether. A much better way would be to have the model interact with it in some way, either through writing on the glass themselves, using a prop (such as a liquid?) or by pressing his hand (or even face) up to the glass. You'd need to secure the glass in the studio somehow though.

If the model's hand is against the glass it will give the viewer the impression of an invisible boundary, symbolized by the words you've used. It may even imply that the emotions can be a barrier to the person, though there is also the suggestion of clarity/self-awareness through the glass. (I'm rambling, sorry.)

Out of interest, is 'piece of mind' a play on words?

haha interesting, yeah was thinking of a hand up, that'll have to be tried next..
have to think about how it can be secured though, oohh the complications haha!

Piece of mind was just thrown in, make of it what you want! :)

In a worst-case scenario you could get someone else to hold the glass off-camera, but it wouldn't be very cool to have someone else in the studio disrupting the flow. :) You'll prob have to engineer some kind of frame or stand for it.

Just rap the bedroom door as usual if you need any more help or poseage tonight, I'll try to look less like I've just got outta bed next time...

just as it is.

thanks ALi, what about a hand up though.. showing that there is a barrier?

let me see it and i'll tell you which i prefer.
i like the simplicity of this. a sheen of the glass or fingerprints on it might help convey the idea of glass. a hand might work too - just scared it will lose the simplicity.
a face squished against it like he's walked into it might be quite fun too.

ahh, lots of options really, i'm gonna leave the sheen, but gonna go for the hand next!

I love the photo and can't resist having my 1/2ps worth. I'm with the Neil and the you. I think a body part against the glass is the way to go. The glass represents clarity and objectivity in thought processes or the way to it. A hand pressed against the glass is resistance, a forehead pressed against it is submission. Or maybe I should have another glass of fizzy wine....;)
